Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB)

Overview

Certain Modifier or blend of modifiers are called as bitumen modifiers improves the properties of bitumen and bituminous mixes. Bitumen treated with these modifiers are known as Polymer Modified Bitumen. PMBs are designed to offer superior durability, elasticity, and resistance to deformation, making them particularly useful in road construction. Polymer Modified bitumen are used in wearing course depending upon the requirements of extreme climatic variations.

The advantages of POLYMER Modified Bitumen in road works are summarized below:
  • Lower susceptibility to daily and seasonal temperature variations.
  • Higher resistance to deformation at elevated pavement temperature.
  • Better age resistance properties.
  • Better adhesion between aggregate and binder
  • Higher fatigue life of mixes.
  • Delay of cracking and reflective cracking.
  • Overall improved performance in extreme climatic conditions and under heavy traffic conditions.
The selection criteria for grade of Polymer modified bitumen shall be based on atmospheric temperature as shown below:

PMB 120: For temperature below 35°

PMB 70: For temperature between 35 to 45°C.

PMB 40: For temperature above 45°C
