Overview

Furnace Oil (also known as Fuel Oil, Heavy Oil, or Residual Oil) is a crucial energy source widely used in industrial and commercial heating applications. It is a dark, viscous liquid fuel derived from crude oil, typically heavier and denser than other petroleum products. Furnace oil is a cost-effective fuel for generating high-temperature heat in large-scale processes, making it ideal for industries such as manufacturing, metalworking, and power generation.

Composition and Properties

Furnace oil consists primarily of long-chain hydrocarbons and residual oils from the refining process. It has the following key properties:

  • Viscosity: Furnace oil is highly viscous and requires heating to reduce its viscosity for proper atomization and combustion.
  • Sulfur Content: Depending on the grade, furnace oil may contain varying levels of sulfur, influencing its environmental impact and regulatory compliance.
  • Energy Density: It has a high energy content, typically providing between 38,000 to 44,000 kJ/kg, making it highly efficient for generating heat.
  • Boiling Point: It has a higher boiling point than lighter fuels, requiring specific burners and equipment for efficient combustion.
Environmental Considerations
  • High Sulfur Content: The combustion of furnace oil releases sulfur oxides (SOx) into the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution and acid rain. To mitigate this, many countries regulate the sulfur content in furnace oil, requiring the use of low-sulfur grades to reduce emissions.
  • Carbon Emissions: Being a petroleum-based fuel, furnace oil contributes to the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases during combustion, making it a less environmentally friendly option compared to cleaner energy sources.
  • Waste Residue: Burning furnace oil can result in the production of soot and unburned hydrocarbons, which may require additional filtration and cleaning to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
